Introducing the VirtualMedia Concept

In this paper, we give a short overview of our current research on abstractions and concepts needed to achieve the long-term objective of realizing a genuine universal media server. Such a media server is supposed to support a wide range of non-trivial multimedia applications in an approximately optimal manner. Focusing on the handling of raw media data, we argue that the traditional data independence abstraction often tends to impede processing media data at optimal performance. However, instead of abandoning data independence (which is most usual today), we propose an enhancement that is particularly tailored to the characteristics of media data processing: transformation independence. Conceptually, transformation independence can be supported by introducing a virtual media object layer at the server. The VirtualMedia concept shortly introduced in this paper not only provides such virtual media objects. There is also a strong focus on optimization of (multi-)media transformations (including cross-media transformations and optimization-oriented materialization of media objects).
